The Shoemaker's Holiday
Thomas Dekker wrote The Shoemaker's Holiday in 1598 and it rapidly acquired an honoured place in the annals of English comedy, which it has held ever since. It tells the simple story of how one Simon Eyre, a shoemaker, becomes Lord Mayor of London, and it also follows the fortunes of the young lovers Rowland Lacy and Rose, the daughter of the previous Lord Mayor.
