Still Life
This is the story of an illicit love affair. We see the tentative beginnings, the rising expectations and, sadly, the inevitable end. Both married, they cling to something they know cannot be - even their last goodbye is ruined by a chance intrusion. They part with only the cold comfort of a handshake. If we add that Still Life is set against the background of a smoky pre-war railway station, you'll realise we're talking about the play which was turned into the 1946 film Brief Encounter.
