The Secret Rapture
Here is a play very much 'of our time', as directly relevant to us in 1993 as it was when the National Theatre first delighted and moved audiences with it in 1988. Commentators then saw it as a political play, yet the playwright himself has called it 'the most personal and private' he has written.
How does a truly 'good' person survive in today's self-seeking society? What effect does 'goodness' have on other people? This is Hare's challenging theme, developed through scenes of crackling wit and humour, and through characters who we find equally attractive and repulsive. Serious the play may be, but it is never solemn - which is the secret of its appeal.
