In the build up to the outbreak of World War 1, Rudyard Kipling is determined that his under-age, severely short-sighted son John should enlist.

John has twice been rejected for military service due to his poor eyesight.

Undeterred, Kipling pulls strings and John is given a commission in the Irish Guards.  The result of Kipling’s actions will haunt his family for the rest of their lives.
