The Lady's Not for Burning
Set in 1400, the central plot - of a disillusioned soldier who wishes to be hanged because he sees no purpose in life having fallen in love with a witch condemned to burn - seems an unlikely one for a comedy, but Fry has surrounded this love story with a rich variety of colourful characters and an abundance of humour. This, combined with a poetic beauty of language and the unusual, haunting quality of the central theme, makes it the perfect entertainment.
