Heartbreak House
Shaw originally wrote Heartbreak House before the impending First World War. However, for this production David Smidman has updated his script to 1939, immediately before the Second World War.
The play takes place during a weekend at the home of Captain Shotover and involves itself intimately with his family, their friends and their lovers. Such was the style of living at the time that no one person is able to control his feelings for the other, resulting in heartbreak, much emotion and a degree of sadness. Shaw, in his own inimitable style has created here a masterpiece of conflicting human relationships - the dialogue is sparkling and witty, the comedy being in typical Shawian style and the ultimate tragedy of the characters themselves is timed superbly with the ultimate tragedy of the War.
