Doctor Faustus
A new performing version devised by Paul Lawrance
There is nothing anywhere else in English drama like the extraordinary 'Devil's-eye-view' of man which Marlowe portrays in Doctor Faustus. 400 years after its first performance, the play remains deeply unsettling yet oddly funny, still able to stir emotions with its mixtures of piety and blasphemy, laughter and fear. It is great fun, with clowns and fools, magic tricks and special effects - not by any means a 'tragedy' as we usually understand the term, more a 'comedy/thriller'.
