Children in Uniform
A production by Teddington Children's Theatre
Adapted by Barbara Burnham from Madchen in Uniform by Christa Winsloe
From the end of the First World War to the early 1930s, under Germany's ruling Weimar, the style of life flouted the bourgeoise ideals and virtues of the traditional classes. These members of society as reflected in Children in Uniform were horrified by the decadence of Berlin and the control of their country falling to war-profiteers and unprincipled politicians.
The play is set in a girls' boarding school giving an upbringing of the times. In the same way that mere NCOs were trained and prepared to be the finest commissioned officers overnight, young girls were educated in the philosophy that their training should have the same rigorous Prussian discipline.
