The Chalk Garden

The Chalk Garden is based in Mrs. St. Maugham's home in deepest Sussex and is centred around a family struggle for the love and understanding of the grandchild, Laurel.  Grandmother (Mrs. Maugham) and Mother (Olivia) are locked in conflict while the house is going to seed.  The Child's behavious is deteriorating, the Butler is dying and the Manservant can't cope.  Enter Miss Madrigal, the new governess.  She cautiously brings about change to the house, its occupants and the beloved garden.  But there is a dark secret about her.
