Becket
Translated by Lucienne Hill
The play deals with the relationship between King Henry II and Thomas Becket, starting with the happy relationship of friends, enjoying the pleasures of life to the full, and moves on through Becket's rise as a courtier and friend of the King, to the tremendously powerful position of Chancellor of England, and finally to his appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury, which leads to the fatal conflict with the King and his tragic murder.
