Our Country’s Good

The funny, uplifting & true story of the first play to be performed in Australia.
-
Production Company:

Australia, 1789. A young lieutenant is directing rehearsals for the first play ever to be staged in that country - with only two copies of text, a cast of convicts and one leading lady about to be hanged...

Timberlake Wertenbaker's hugely popular and influential drama continues to captivate audiences 30 years after its initial production at the Royal Court. This inventive, occasionally harrowing, and ultimately uplifting play raises timeless questions about what makes for a country's good: the principles of justice and punishment, the value of culture and the redemptive power of theatre itself.

Signed Performance – The Performance on  Wednesday 29th June 2022 at 19:45 will be signed by a British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter on stage.   We are very pleased that our interpreter is a TTC member. Meet our Signer.

Relaxed Performance – On Saturday 2nd July 2022 at 14:30 we are pleased to present a performance where the ambience of the auditorium and theatre 'rules' are relaxed. This performance is ideal for audience members with learning disabilities or autism, or anyone who would prefer, or benefit from, a more relaxed environment including being able to leave and return to your seat at any time during the show. There will also be heightened lighting over the auditorium seating area.

Visual StoryThis is designed for visitors to the relaxed performance of Our Country’s Good to help prepare you if you are curious (or anxious) about your visit. It contains lots of images along with helpful information including: • photographs of Hampton Hill Theatre to help you find your way around • descriptions for the main characters in the show • notes to highlight any potentially distressing elements of the plot and production and outline of the story of the show. We hope you enjoy the show.
