Three sisters reunite in their old Lancashire home after their mother’s funeral.

They’ve all chosen different paths in life - but what is the dark secret they all share? Will it bring the family closer together or tear them apart?

And what of the new generation; Zack, Morgan and Cassie?

Are they ready to face the truth about their family - and themselves?

I saw this play, directed by writer Genni Trickett, in a small village hall in Exeter, and I immediately fell in love with it; I knew straight away that it needed a bigger audience, and that I wanted to be the one to direct it.

Weird Women is completely outside my comfort zone, as I normally direct comedies, but I really hope I can do this show justice as it is a wonderful piece of writing with some incredible parts, particularly for the women! It is led by a trio of women in their 50s, playing three very different sisters. Each and every woman in this show goes on an incredible emotional journey that left me sobbing by the end and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!

Characters

Lilian, 59. Quiet, reserved and downtrodden. Lillian tries to avoid a fight, and is very much a traditional wife, happily married to Eddie, the local vicar, but things aren’t always what they seem. (Lancashire accent required)

Barbie, 56. Mystical and determined, Barbie stayed at home while her sisters left. She has never had a job, or children, choosing to stay and support her mother. But does she really believe that her mother was a powerful witch? (Lancashire accent required)

Diana, 52. The youngest sister, more confident and independent, she moved to London and brought up her daughters away from Lancashire. Diana is curious about her inheritance but is clearly hiding something… and just why hasn’t she visited for so long? (Lancashire accent required, but can be slightly softer)

Eddie, 60. A vicar and family man, married to Lilian. Eddie firmly believes that a woman’s place is in the home,  and as the play progresses we see more of his manipulative and controlling side. To put it simply, Eddie is a pompous, self-righteous, hypocritical misogynist; he is the antagonist of this show and needs an actor who can confidently play both sides of his character. (Lancashire accent required)

Zack, 35. Eddie and Lillian’s son, A successful, charming and confident banker, living a seemingly blessed life, but does he take after his mother, or his father and is he aware of what happens behind closed doors? (Neutral accent - standard English).

Morgan, 33. Diana’s eldest daughter. Quiet and shy, but fiercely protective of her little sister. (Standard English or mild Estuary English - brought up in London)

Cassie, 29. Outgoing, confident and independent… at least on the outside, but Cassie has a dark secret which threatens to unravel the whole family. (Standard English or mild Estuary English - brought up in London)

I look forward to seeing you at the auditions.  In the meantime, do let me know if you have any questions.
